After practicing how to enlarge using a grid, students used photos of themselves to make a realistic self-portrait. We then loomed at a variety of famous artists who have made Abstract portraits, and students came up with a way to change their portrait into a more abstract one.

After firing our clay pots, we are ready for glaze! Once they are fired a 2nd time they will be put on display in our library.
6th grade learned how to use Positive and Negative space to make a good composition. Notan is a Japanese word that refers to the interplay between light and dark areas.
Students made 2 Notans- one to display as a Notan cutout, and a 2nd one to add other materials to, while still trying to have a balanced composition. Students began our first quarter by learning the 3 main methods of hand building with clay- slabs, pinch pots, and coils. After a day of sketching ideas, learning vocab, and practicing the 3 methods, they began their creations. Once fired in the kiln, they will be ready to glaze!
