After learning how to make Pinch Pots in 5th grade, the 6th graders are learning how to make Slabs and use them to make a clay cylinder. They will also be using ceramic glazes this year, so many of them are making mugs that they can drink out of when they take them home.
6th grade turned on their cooperation and creativity skills to create a sculpture using a variety of materials such as cardboard, tubes, cups, and other found objects. They will be on display in the library once completed!
6th grade did double duty with this project- we learned how to draw realistically by enlarging a grid from our mannequin drawing. Then we had a color mixing boot camp day- and reviewed mixing the primary colors to make the secondary colors while also practicing blending. Then we challenged ourselves to mix all of our own colors using the Primaries plus black and white.
Everyone's mug made it through the first firing and are ready for glaze. Check back in the "Student Art Galleries" tab to see the finished results.
We went over strategies to help us observe and draw. Students chose a pose for their mannequins and put their skills to the test.
6th grade learned about the history of clay, clay vocabulary, and construction methods while making their mugs. They created an expressive face and "added and subtracted"- added parts or made carvings and textures. They did a great job!
Students began 4th quarter by creating parodies of either Starry Night, The Scream, or American Gothic.
